Scotland continue to make waves in T20 World Cup 2021. After shocking Bangladesh in their tournament opener, Scotland defeated Papua New Guinea by 17 runs in Oman to move step closer to a spot in the Super 12 stages of the showpiece event on Tuesday.

Scotland went to the top of the Group B points table with 2 wins in as many matches. All they need is a win over hosts Oman in their final Round 1 match on Thursday to progress to the Super 12. Scotland can qualify with a defeat too but they will have to rely on Net Run Rate to go through if they drop points.

Scotland vs PNG, T20 World Cup 2021: Highlights

Scotland rode on a fine fifty from Richie Berrington (49-ball 70) to post a healthy total of 165/9 in 20 overs. Berrington took his time to get used to the conditions at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground but he launched a terrific assault, hitting 3 sixes and 6 boundaries.

Wicketkeeper Matthew Cross hit a 36-ball 45 as he stitched a 02-run stand with Berrington after Scotland lost their opener Kyle Coetzer and George Munsey early.

It looked like Scotland would post a total in excess of 180 when Berrington and Cross were going hard but Simon Atai broke the stand by picking up the wicket of the latter.

Scotland fell from 151 for 4 to 165 for 9, losing as many as 6 wickets in the last two overs. In fact, they lost 4 wickets in Kabua Morea’s last over.

Morea shone with the ball for PNG, finishing with figures of 4/31 while Chad Soper, who made the playing XI on Tuesday after missing the game against Bangladesh, shone with figures of 3/24.

Norman Vanua fireworks in vain

In response, PNG were restricted to 35 for 5 after Scotland pacers Bradley Wheal, Josh Davey and Alasdair Evans ran through the top-order.

It looked like an early end to the Round 1 match but Norman Vanua came up with a counter-attacking display, hitting 47 from just 37 balls. Vanua fell in the 18th over as experienced Davey made sure there was no scare for Scotland in the end overs.

PNG were bowled out for 148 in the 20th over but the newcomers showcased that they won’t go down without a fight.
